“Faust” by Goethe — book design and illustrations

“Faust” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is one of my favourite books of all times. The story is universal and is as relevant now as it was in 18th century.

It is a story of a man, whose lust for life was as strong as his desire to discover the inner workings of human nature and the universe.

His passions were burning him from inside, like lava melting rock.

Close-ups of the book cover

This book cover was made from aviation grade titanium for an art exhibition.

It was secretly welded by my friend working at a factory manufacturing military planes in Moscow to my exact specification.

I also created a series of 26 illustrations for this book, combining traditional engraving with typography, see some of them below.

The demon Mephistopheles makes a bet with God: he says that he can lure God's favourite human being (Faust), who is striving to learn everything that can be known, away from righteous pursuits.

Mephisto takes Faust to a tavern in Germany, where they are attacked by the locals.

Faust goes to Heaven, for he loses only half of the bet. Angels, who arrive as messengers of divine mercy, declare: "He who strives on and lives to strive / Can earn redemption still".
